Beautiful Belize in Central America is an amazing destination to visit with its Caribbean vibe, ancient Mayan culture & world class diving & snorkelling. I absolutely loved my visit to this small country tucked between Mexico & Guatemala on the Caribbean sea. Why should you go?
I'd visited Mayan temples in Mexico before but in Belize, it was a totally different experience. There is nothing quite like discovering ancient temples with only a handful of other people & the wildlife for company, to bring out your inner explorer.
I particularly enjoyed approaching by river & through the jungle to discover the remains of Lamanai & exploring the vast complex at Caracol (bigger than modern day Belize City) with just our small group & the roar of the howler monkeys for company.
Home to the second largest reef in the world, this Unesco World Heritage Site is most famous for the Blue Hole but the snorkelling & diving is excellent. The reef is well maintained & looked after to protect the coral & the sealife here. We saw turtles, green moray eels, reef sharks & rays as well as scores of fish.
When you are ready to take a break from snorkelling, relax on white sandy beaches under the shade of palm trees.
See the howler & the spider monkeys in the wild as you explore the country, they are seen in many places just hanging out in the trees & in the case of the howler monkeys, you'll probably hear them too.
If you are bird watcher, this is an amazing place to see birdlife including the large jabiru stork & the national bird, the iconic Keel billed toucan. We recommend the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary with over 540 species.
Whilst jaguars do still live in the wild here, you are unlikely to see one roaming about. To see these amazing animals, we recommend a visit to Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, the world's first jaguar preserve. Together with the Bladen Nature Reserve, it makes a continuous corridor of protected areas of 250,000 acres. Its also home to tapir, cougar, otters, ocelots, deer, monkeys as well as more than 300 different bird species.
Although Belize is geographically located in Central America, its culture is very much influenced by the Caribbean. Its evident in the food, the music & the general relaxed pace of life. On the cayes, the beach bars & seafood shacks come to life around dusk & its a great place to soak up the atmosphere.
We recommend visiting in the dry season from December to April with average temperatures in the mid to high 20's. Easter is particularly busy so you need to book early if you want to go at this time of the year.
