Top 5 experiences in India
India has a way of getting under your skin—in the best possible way. It’s a country of dazzling contrasts: ancient and modern, chaotic and serene, spicy and sweet. From the snowy Himalayas in the north to the sleepy backwaters of the south, it absolutely captures the imagination.
With the recent Race across the World series featuring India, it is somewhere that has gained popularity since. Here are our top 5 incredible experiences to add to your bucket list in India.
Sunrise at the Taj Mahal
No matter how many photos you’ve seen, nothing prepares you for your first glimpse of the Taj Mahal. Arriving at sunrise—before the crowds and in the soft golden light—is something special. Mist hovers over the Yamuna River, and the white marble glows pink as the sun peeks above the horizon.
It’s quieter & more peaceful, allowing a moment before the world wakes up to truly appreciate this iconic mausoleum.
Top tip: Bring a scarf or shawl, the early mornings can be a bit chilly.
Tiger spotting in Ranthambore
There’s nothing quite like sitting in an open-top jeep, heart pounding, eyes scanning the jungle for a flash of stripes. Ranthambore is one of the best places in India to spot wild tigers, and if you are lucky enough to spot one, it is simply incredible.
The park itself is stunning too: ancient temples hidden in the undergrowth, crumbling palaces reclaimed by nature, and herds of deer leaping through the grasslands. Even if the tigers prove elusive, the atmosphere alone is worth the trip.
This is on my own bucket list probably not surprising given the name of my travel agency!
Top tip: Try not to watch only through your camera lens.

Relax on a houseboat in the Backwaters of Kerala
Imagine drifting through a network of lazy waterways, coconut palms swaying overhead and kingfishers darting past your deck, that's the backwaters in Kerala. Hiring a traditional houseboat with a thatched roof (called a kettuvallam) for a night or two is one of the most tranquil ways to experience rural India.
Your onboard chef will whip up delicious South Indian dishes, and you’ll fall asleep to the sound of crickets and water lapping at the sides. It's slow travel at its best—and an invitation to truly unwind. I loved this experience - it was so peaceful & relaxing. Such a far cry from the bustling chaos of Delhi!
Top tip: Choose one with a rooftop deck, great for viewing daily life by day & the stars by night.
Take the toy train to Shimla
The gorgeous Kalka–Shimla railway, fondly known as the toy train, chugs through pine forests, over stone bridges, and around jaw-dropping bends as it climbs into the foothills of the Himalayas. You’ll pass sleepy villages, wave to school kids, and breathe in the crisp mountain air along the way.
The journey to this colonial hill station, featured in Rudyard Kipling's Kim is so much more than just a mode of transport.
Top tip: Sit on the right side of the train on the way up for the best views.
Experience the flavours of India
We couldn’t make a list without mentioning the food. From fiery street-side chaat in Delhi to buttery dosas in the south, India is a feast in every sense of the word. Every region has its own specialities. Part of the joy of travel in India is discovering what you love the most. I loved the Keralan fish curries & the thali platters when I visited.
- Join a cooking class in Jaipur for Rajasthani cuisine or Goa for cuisine with Portuguese, Konkani, and Maharashtrian influences
- Eat with locals in a village homestay, a unique experience that you'll always remember
- Try a thali (a traditional platter). This is a great way to experience different flavours in one meal.
Top tip: Don't be afraid to try something new - but maybe ask how spicy it is first!

Intriguing India has so much to offer - varied landscapes, fascinating culture, impressive temples, friendly people & incredible food. I loved my time in Kerala but still have much more to see. Another visit is definitely on the cards for me. Is it on your bucket list too?
