Wildlife experiences really bring joy to our customers & we love bringing those experiences to them. There is nothing as memorable or as exciting as seeing an animal in its own environment from whale watching to safari. Seeing animals in the wild has no guarantees so many of our customers do want to visit sanctuaries or refuges. Sadly, many sanctuaries do not have the best interests of the animals at heart. Here is our guide to responsible wildlife viewing:
In the wild
Its the best way to see wildlife, the lack of guarantee just adds to the excitement & the joy when you actually see the animal or animals you hoped for. It is not that simple though. Take whale watching for example - there are many operators who make sure they don't impact the environment i.e. not too many boats, don't get too close & don't feed or otherwise entice them. The best ones will usually be supporting the local wildlife in some way too.
Sanctuaries
Sanctuaries, sometimes referred to as rescue centres are trickier still. Some claim to be looking after orphaned animals, offering reintroduction to the wild or otherwise helping the wildlife, some actually are doing this but sadly many aren't.

Have you been "Green washed"?
I am guilty of being "green washed", the concept of believing the claims of sanctuaries that they are ethical. I walked alongside the elephants in Sri Lanka but did feel uncomfortable about the baby elephant chained up whilst tourists bottle fed him & the elder elephant who listlessly shuffled around the post he was chained to. This particular 'sanctuary' is no longer recommended by many tour operator in favour or more ethical 'hands off' experiences.

We will always recommend ethical options for you. If we can't book a particular experience for you, we'll let you know why & recommend suitable alternatives.
