5 Reasons why I love a small group tour
My first small group tour was to fascinating Japan, with just 5 others & our local guide. We explored the Japanese Alps, visited an uninhabited island, dressed as a geisha, cycled, white water rafted, visited a restored Samurai house & watched a sumo tournament. I know that there is no chance I'd have known I could do all of that in 14 days, let alone arrange it all independently. I was hooked & couldn't wait for my next one. Here are my top 5 reasons why I love them:
1 - Expert local guides
They know the best time to visit the main sights (which can be very crowded) but they will also uncover hidden gems that only the locals may know. They are often able to open doors & navigate language barriers leading to more authentic cultural experiences - homestays, family run businesses, local cafes & markets for example. A great guide makes it feel more like travelling with a knowledgeable friend.
2 - Immersive experiences
In a small group, you can visit smaller family run restaurants, access more off the beaten track experiences & generally enjoy a more immersive holiday. I've found they are more flexible too. I once saw a local bar in Malawi which I would never have visited alone. Having heard me comment on it when passing, the guide took us all there for a drink the next day.

3 - Value for money
When you think about what's already included as standard - accommodation, transport, flights, transfers, activities, meals (usually breakfast but often there will be other meals too). That's the majority of the holiday cost. You'll need spending money for optional activites, other meals, drinks, snacks & any shopping you want to do. Your guide will know the best value places to eat out, where to buy the best souvenirs & otherwise help you find the best prices.
4 - Take the stress out of travel
Someone else will book tickets, arrange transport & be on hand to advise on local customs. Your holiday time is precious, you'll want to make the most of it. You don't want to be worrying about how you are going to get train tickets for the next day.
5 - Travel with like-minded people
I often hear "I don't really like group tours" & if you are envisaging a bus-load of people following a harassed looking guide holding an umbrella, I'm with you. Small group tours are completely different & are more than just looking at the sights, you get a real insight into the local culture. Your fellow travellers are looking to explore & experience the destination too so you already know you have something in common.
