My holiday to Khao Lak
Khao Lak is about 1hr north of Phuket airport & is a great resort for families. Its really a series of small villages along the main road, centered around the Nang Biang night market. We stayed about 5 mins drive at the Sands by Kathathani. This brand has 4 hotels in the area - 3 on our complex & another near the night market.
Pools & Beach
The beach was sandy, with some black sand - its not dirty, its tin particles remnants of the mining past. The waves did get quite big when the tide came in but at high tide, it was much calmer. The warm water was a pleasure especially considering my last swim in the sea was in Suffolk!
The main pool was clear, clean & pretty shallow - getting my son out of the pool was almost impossible. There was also a small water park with a lazy river in the family section. We enjoyed the lazy river (it was actually quite quick). We also managed a dip in the adult only pool, a peaceful oasis with only 2 other couples there.

Dining
Breakfast was busy but there was plenty of choice including omelettes to order & freshly made waffles. We had lunch by the pool most days which suited us & we particularly enjoyed the blended banana shakes. If you want to dine beach side, the Talay seafood restaurant is beautifully located.
In the evenings, we walked the short distance to the main road. Here there were plenty of restaurants offering delicious thai curries, stirfries & fresh seafood. Most restaurants offered western dishes if you prefer. We had ice cream rolls flavoured respectively with kit kat, banana & oreos, created to order from a street cart for approx. £2. Its quite a spectacle to watch.
What to do
You can choose from excursions to the Similan Islands, the Surin Islands & inland to Khao Sok National Park. A visit to the tsunami museum is a sobering reminder of the devastation & loss of life experienced here.
We chose to visit the Nang Biang Night Market, where we enjoyed street food & tried our hand at bartering. Available souvenirs include toys, local crafts, baseball caps & football shirts, handbags, clothing & much more. We travelled back to our hotel by songthaew, a kind of open backed van with 2 rows of seats - which was quick & convenient.
