Discover Taiwan
Beautiful Taiwan with its gorgeous landscapes, fascinating culture & friendly, welcoming people is too often overlooked. This relatively small island is home to incense-infused temples, modern cities, mountains, lakes & waterfalls. It offers superb hiking trails as well as a fabulous round island cycle route, just perfect for exploring! Its on my bucket list & here is why I think it should be on yours too.
What is there to see?
Visit vibrant capital city Taipei, with its ultra-modern skyscrapers, ancient temples, buzzy street markets & convenient public transportation. Don't miss the iconic Taipei 101, once the tallest building in the world offering magnificient views. We recommend a visit to Elephant Mountain on the eastern outskirts for the best city view.
Taipei is a fabulous destination for foodies offering everything from street food in the night markets & tiny ramen bars to high end fine dining restaurants. Raohe Night Market is a lively bustling place to go for excellent local authentic street food. Try stinky tofu (it smells far worse than it tastes), oyster omelettes or beef noodle soup as you wander the stalls.
Within easy reach of the city is Yangmingshan National Park, known for its geothermal activity & plentiful hiking options. We recommend a visit to Beitou for natural hot springs, hiking as well as parks & gardens to explore. Opt for a free foot spa or pay for one of the resorts in the area.
Where else should I go?
Sun Moon Lake
This famous lake situated in central Taiwan is serene & calm. Lalu island in the middle separates the lake into the 'sun' & the 'moon' hence its name. Whilst the lake is the main draw, there are also pagodas & temples to explore in addition to some great hiking. We recommend cycling around the lake or kayaking or paddleboarding on it.
Alishan National Scenic Area
This gorgeous mountain region is best known for its misty forests as well as amazing sunsets & sunrises. Hiking is the best way to explore with plenty of well signposted trails. We recommend visiting the highest temple in Tawian, Shouzhen with its 10,000 miniature buddhas. A ride on the Alisha Forest Railway is a must too.
Tainan
Taiwan's original capital & oldest city offers a rich history & a more traditional feel.
- Explore the alleyways of the old town to discover temples & historic buildings around every corner.
- Discover the dutch colonial past at the Anping Fort & the unique Anping Treehouse, a warehouse reclaimed by nature.
- Outside of the city, admire the salt fields of Jingziajiao & learn about the history of salt making.
When is the best time to go?
We recommend visiting in Spring (April to early May) for warm sub-tropical temperatures & the cherry blossom season. Alternatively, after the heat of the summer & the monsoons in October or November.
