Why Romania should be on your bucket list
"Everyone should go to Romania" is the first thing my lovely customer said on her return recently. I, of course, hoped she'd really enjoy her holiday so this was great to hear. I love hearing all about my customers holidays & getting feedback. Her comments inspired me to share more about this amazing destination with you.
Romania is gorgeous with spectacular mountains, pretty medieval towns & fairy tale castles. If the stunning scenery isn't enough, there is also a wealth of fascinating history blended with intriguing myths & legends. As more of us head further north in the summer months to avoid the extreme heat, this incredible country is an affordable alternative which is bound to delight.
Bucharest
The capital city is a fascinating mix of pockets of quiet charm, a lively culture & striking architecture. Visitors can explore elegant 19th-century avenues, cobblestoned streets in the Old Town (Lipscani) & the huge Palace of the Parliament, often cited as the heaviest & most expensive building in the world.
A walking tour is a great way to get your bearings & learn more about the history of Romania. Other highlights include the Romanian Athenium, the Stavropoleos Monastery & the gorgeous Carturesti Carusel bookstore. For an escape from the bustle of the city, head to one of the many leafy parks like Cişmigiu Gardens or Herăstrău Park.
Brasov
This beautiful city's well preserved medieval streets are framed by colourful baroque and Gothic buildings. With the stunning backdrop of the forested Carpathian Mountains, its a lovely place to explore. A stroll through the charming Old Town's cobbled streets & you will discover inviting cafes, small boutiques & hidden courtyards.
Make sure you visit lively Piața Sfatului (Council Square) and the impressive Black Church, the largest gothic church in Romania. With direct flights from Stansted with Wizz Air, a city break here is a great option.

Bran Castle
Widely believed to be the inspiration behind Bram Stoker's Dracula, spectacular Bran Castle is perched high above the valley with a flowing river below. Walk the time tunnel & watch the history come to life though multi-media technology or visit the "A history of the dreads in Transylvania" exhibition about local myths & fears.
Whilst this is a popular place, it is worth a visit to explore & learn more about the history, myths & legends surrounding this intriguing castle. Go at Halloween for a spooky experience!
The Prince of Wales's Guesthouse
In a tiny hamlet in the Zalan Valley near Viscri in Romania, King Charles III (yes - our current King!) bought & renovated several buildings for his own private nature retreat. Visitors can stay at the guesthouse or surrounding cottages offering an authentic rural Transylvanian experience, with the way of life largely unchanged over the years.
With no television or radio, peace & tranquillity is key here. Take part in guided walks, horse riding or a horse & cart ride depending on when you visit. Meals are taken at a shared table with a daily menu created from local ingredients. An optional extra is the wood fired salt water hot tub or try your hand at traditional crafts like carving walking sticks or baking chimney cakes.
Transfagarasan Highway
This road dubbed 'the best road in the world' by Jeremy Clarkson in Top Gear is quite something. As it winds back & forth over a distance of 90km with some very steep drops, it isn't for the faint hearted. It is possible to drive it yourself however with plenty of tight turns & steep drops, you may prefer to join a tour or find a car & driver to take you.
Not only does the road offer stunning vistas over the surrounding countryside, but you may be able to see wild bears along the roadside. Remember they can be dangerous so never approach them. It is recommended to stay in your vehicle.
