Alternatives in New Zealand
New Zealand is known for its magnificent scenery, unique experiences & fascinating Māori culture. Places like Milford Sound & Queenstown are often top of the list & they are undoubtedly worth visiting. In this article, we look into where else you can go for similar experiences or where to go next for repeat visitors.
Want to see Milford Sound & its incredible scenery?
Milford Sound is often one of the first places clients list when describing what they want to see in New Zealand. With the dramatic cliffs, stunning waterfalls & the wildlife it is an incredible place to visit. If you have been before or are looking for an alternative, we recommend...
Doubtful Sound
Known as the Sound of Silence, this gorgeous Sound offers a similar experience to Milford Sound. The scenery is perhaps not quite as dramatic but the cliffs, waterfalls & wildlife are just as stunning. Less people visit so it is a more peaceful experience.
Why we love it?
- It's more of an adventure to get to requiring a boat, a bus & then the cruise on the Sound itself
- You can spend the night on the cruise, there is nothing quite like waking up surrounded by the incredible scenery.
Heard about Waitomo Caves & its glowworms?
Female glowworms use bioluminescence to emit a greenish glow primarily to attract mates. Often found in caves, the effect of the thousands of glowing lights is magical. Did you know they aren't worms at all? They are actually beetles.
Waitomo Caves near Hamilton on the North Island is the most famous place to see them. Here you can take a boat ride through the grotto & even try black water rafting. If you are looking for an alternative, we recommend...
Te Anau Glowworm Caves
Here your experience starts with a scenic catamaran boat ride across the peaceful Lake Te Anau. At Cavern House on the western side of the lake, find out more about the geology & history of these young caves (at just 12,000 years old!). Your guide then leads you into the underground wonderland with whirlpools, rocks shaped by 1000's of years of rushing water & even an impressive underground waterfall.
Why we love them?
- The cave are quieter making for a more peaceful experience
- It feels like this underground labyrinth is still in the process of being created around you (which of course it is!)
